They function like oil lamps and glass oil candles. Recommended oil is 99% pure paraffin oil that can be purchased at any hardware or drugstore. Scented oils, aromatherapy oils or citronella oils (citronella to be used outdoors only) may also be used. Agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. Although Agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks but can be common in certain Metamorphic rocks. Colorful Agates were obtained over 3,000 years ago from the Achates River, now called Dirillo, in Sicily.

In many traditions Agate is believed to cure the stings of scorpions and the bites of snakes, soothe the mind, prevent contagion, still thunder and lightning, promote eloquence, secure the favour of the powerful, and bring victory over enemies. Persian Magi* are also known to have prized Agate rings in their work and beliefs. Some followers of Pagan religions also believe Agate is a crystal whose powers can be used for love, mental clarity, and good luck in card games.

 *The Magi were a tribe from ancient Media who, prior to the establishment of the Achaemenid Empire in 550 BC, were responsible for religious and funerary practices of the ancient Iranian people. Later they accepted the Zoroastrian religion and developed it into Zurvanism, which would become the predominant form of Zoroastrianism during the Sassanid era (AD 226–650). No traces of Zurvanism exist beyond the 10th century. In English, the term may refer to a shaman, sorcerer or wizard; it is the origin of the words MAGIC and MAGICIAN.
